About
Situated atop the Valparaiso moraine, Taltree offers more than 300 acres of woody plant collections, formal gardens, wetlands, woodlands, and prairies. Damien and Rita Gabis, who founded Taltree in 1997, envisioned it as a place where people could come to be refreshed and restored, find inspiration and creativity in nature, and learn about horticulture and ecology. During the spring of 1998, Taltree staff and volunteers planted 35 acres of warm season prairie and more than 7000 oaks and hickories. Soon thereafter a large wetland that had been drained for agriculture was restored. More than 80 bird species live at Taltree, including bobolinks, bluebirds, grasshopper sparrows, green herons, and migrating warblers. Three miles of trails allow you to explore Taltree's diverse landscape. Open daily.
