Legend has it that this bridge was built with steel salvaged from the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago, Illinois. Local lore says that the metal arches came from the world's first Ferris Wheel, which debuted at that exposition. Whatever the source of its steel, Dunn's Bridge was renovated in 2003 after falling into serious disrepair and is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Spanning the Kankakee River, the bridge is open to pedestrian use. The three-acre Dunn's Bridge County Park offers the only boat access to the Kankakee River in Porter County. The Kankakee watershed covers some 3,000 square miles that were once predominantly marshlands. Though the river has been extensively dredged and straightened and its surrounding wetlands drained, it is still very scenic and shelters abundant wildlife.
