With significant stretches in both Indiana and Illinois, the Calumet River system has helped link cities and towns throughtout the Chicago region for centuries. However, much of the river system has changed since the Native Americans and early settlers first started using the waterways. The East Branch of the Little Calumet that runs a 6 mile (total) loop from the National Park-Lakefront Riverwalk in Portage. Due to channelization, this portion of the Little Calumet is deep and wide, making it a great paddle for people of all ages and skill levels. The last portion of the trail also offers paddlers a sense of the river's pre-settlement character as it begins to take on its original twists and turns through wetland and floodplain forest.
