About

Winding through parts of both Indiana and Illinois, the Calumet River system has provided the lower Great Lakes region an important waterway since Native Americans and early settlers started using the waterway centuries ago. Today's Calumet River system is split into three distinct sections - the Calumet River in Chicago's Southside, the Grand Calumet River which runs from Calumet City, IL through Gary IN and finally West Branches of the Little Calumet River. Due to channelization, the water trail remains deep and wide which allows for easy navigation. With beautiful bank vegetation and three active Bald Eagle nesting sites along the river, the West branch of the Little Calumet offers a great paddling trip for all ages and ability levels.
