Experience Porter County’s Vibrant Leaves on a Fall Drive

The staff at Indiana Dunes Tourism has compiled some of the best places in Porter County to experience the autumn colors and they are inviting people to enjoy a  colorful fall drive or hike.

The fall foliage spots that the tourism bureau assembled were all suggested by people who live in and enjoy Porter County.

The fall foliage is especially stunning in mid-October, although it can usually be enjoyed as late as mid-November.

“Residents don’t have to go great distances to enjoy a fall drive because great drives are right here in Indiana Dunes Country,” said Indiana Dunes Tourism Executive Director Lorelei Weimer.

Indiana Dunes Tourism put together two driving loops (found on p.39 in the Indiana Dunes Activities Guide), both of which have places where people can get out and walk if they’d like.

The Indiana Dunes Driving Loop takes people along the Indiana Dunes and Lake Michigan shoreline, and it encourages people to enjoy a walk on the beach or a hike at the dunes.

The Indiana Dunes Country Loop takes people south of the dunes to Jackson Township, the Valparaiso area and the Kouts area — including the Kankakee River.

Indiana Dunes Tourism hopes to add to the existing fall drives in time for next year, so they are once again asking people to submit their favorite fall drive. People are invited to share their favorite roadway or series of roadways for seeing the area’s dynamic fall leaves.

“Our goal is to make Indiana Dunes Country a destination for visitors who want to see the fall colors and then have them stay to enjoy our restaurants, stores and lodging,” said Ken Kosky, Indiana Dunes Tourism Promotions Director.

“We also hope our efforts will help Porter County residents discover some beautiful areas they may never have taken the opportunity to enjoy.”

People interested in the Fall Drives can pick up an Activities Guide at the Indiana Dunes Visitors Center, 1215 N. State Road 49, Porter, IN, or can download an electronic version from IndianaDunes.com. People can also send their favorite fall spots via e-mail to Indiana Dunes Tourism Niche Market Director Angela Pasyk at [email protected]
